When I go to change my desktop background from the plain blue colour I have now to a picture I always get the blocks of blue surrounding the text under the desktop icons and I can't seem to get rid. Am I missing something?

try control panel>display>appearance>advanced. thats the one that does all the peripheral colour settings.

When you change your background, in the lower rightish area there might be something saying "Background Color" Change that to none if you can.
