Mercury is the second smallest planet; only Pluto is smaller. Mercury’s diameter is 4879 km, while Earth’s is 12,756 km. In fact, Mercury is not much larger than our Moon, which has a diameter of 3475 km.
It takes Mercury only 88 Earth days to orbit the Sun. one solar day on Mercury lasts about as long as 176 days on Earth.
Minimum Distance from Earth 45 million km
Named by the Romans after their fleet-footed and crafty messenger god, Mercury lives up to its namesake in more ways than one.
Mercury is the closest planet to the sun, it is known for its caloris basin. it is made up of iron and nickel

Its name comes from the Roman messenger of the gods Mercury (Greek name Hermes).
