So to keep him still, they are putting him in a "Mummy Restraint"

A mummy restraint is used a lot with children for exams where the child needs to be very still. It is used to protect the child, and to make the exam go by faster and more easily. Basically, the child is wrapped with a blanket from the arms down, so the child cannot flail around.

No, using a mummy restraint will not hurt your child, it will actually keep him from hurting himself or someone else. Like another person said though, it might be scary for him. Try to make a game out of it, and tell him he's going to dressed up like a mummy.

Yes, I'm sure you can be with him. Try to be as relaxed as possible with your son about the eye exam. Children usually take their cue from their parents, so if you are upset, your son will be too. Good luck!

I'm not sure what it is. But you should definitely get a better explanation and/or demonstration of this devise from the doctor's office before you allow your child to be subjected to it. It may not be a big deal, but I'd want to have a good understanding beforehand.

This one sounds like when you take a blanket or some such thing and wrap the child up in it from the neck down with his arms and legs inside the wrap totally non painful but could be scary.Whether or not you can be with him is up to the doctor (You SHOULD be able to be with him,no medical reason not)
