the best thing to use is a partitioning app like acronis or partition magic ... but its really not a good idea to mess with partitions after the operating system is installed ... and sometimes D is part of the restore system for retail pcs ..

You can use Acronis Disk Director for that. It can resize, move, copy, split, and merge partitions without losing your data. Disk Director is easy in use and has a friendly interface so you won't have any trouble using it. Visit a Disk Director site for more information:

When you install an OS like XP or Linux you will be offered to do just that.

If there already an XP setup in E: or some letter after you are stuck, I had NT installed exactly like this and I proceeded on repartition and got real problems.

Linux and UNIX variants don't use this arbitrary lettering so they won't run into problems with repartitioning.

Did you PC have a "pre-installed" OS.

If so, you do NOT want to remove the D partition, as this most likely contains your "restore" or "recovery" programming.
IF you remove this you will be UNABLE to "fix" various problems that require "recovery" operations.

IF YOU INSIST, you will need a program such as "partition magic" that can work with "active" partitions.
