The biggest single problem was they didn't expect to gain power. They were totally unprepared for what they had gained. In addition:
1) They were still at war with Germany.
2) The old nobility created a counter-revolutionary force (White Russia).
3) The British, French and Americans refused to recognized their government.
4) There was interparty strife led by the Mensheviks.
5) The economy was a shambles.
6) They captured the capital, but what about the rest of the empire?
Wow, as I start writing this, I almost gain respect for Lenin, Stalin and Trotsky.

1. Whether to continue the First World War against Germany and Austria-Hungary, and if not, under what terms to make a separate peace. They made a separate peace at Brest-Litovsk and surrendered large parts of the Ukraine to Germany.
2. How they, the Red forces, should deal with the Whites: led by such Tsarist holdouts as Admiral Kolchak and Generals Dennikin and Kornilov. They carried on a civil war against these forces, 1920-1921.
3. What to do about the Allies, who wanted to occupy Russia to prevent war materials from falling into the hands of the Germans. The Allies occupied cities in northern Russia. The Bolsheviks waited them out.
4. What to do about socialists, rightists, moderates, and other parties? The Bolsheviks eliminated them.
5. What to do about the Tsar and his family, who might be the nucleus of a counterrevolution by the forces of the nobility, the middle classes, and the established order? The Bolsheviks killed the Tsar and his family unto the last one.
Sorry for no short answers. I think your teachers will like these (LOL).

Civil war against the "Whites" who believed that Russia should continue its commitment in the Great War (WWI) instead of pulling out as the Bolsheviks had. The Allies backed the Whites, providing war materiel and supplies, as well as some troops, hoping they would succeed in their bid to take over the government and thus rejoin the war.

the "whites" or kerenskyites had won the revolution!!not the bolsheviks!!they had seized the winter palace!!!there was "an american brigade"composed of slavic speaking poles and ex-patriot russian americans which stole the treasures of the romanovs and tried to escape across the country on the trans-siberian railraod to vladivostock on the pacific coast
with the jewels and bullion of gold and silver;but were finally overtaken!!they bought their lives with the treasure and were freed after the adventure came to a screeching halt!!!the british were actively involved in trying to "steer" the outcome of the revolution also ,even though the royal faamily were direct relatives of queen victoria of england!!the bolsheviks usurped the revolution to their own nefarious ends!!! and catherine the great ,perhaps their greatest ruler was german so go figure!!and john paul jones is by many even in russia considered after peter the great as the father of the russian navy!!the russians didn't have "radar" until we gave it to them on the escort vessel "u.s.s san pedro"and the technicians to show them how to use it in late ww2!!!we gave the russians the entire plant, bodymolds and all for the "packard" motorcar considered by it's excellence the ambassadorial car of choice world-wide!!along with it's great engine which was the basis of the superlative t-series tanks with which they fought the nzai panzers so successfully!!as well as the planes which utilized the same engine!!

3. Trying to call all their friends, the one's who said they were stupid to try such a thing, to tell them it actually worked. That took, like, a month.
