It bothers me a lot.

If I had the guts, I'd respond with "That's so N-word" to show them just how bigoted and stupid they're being.. .but I can't even type out the n-word, much less say it.

Usually I just say "Hey, I'm standing right here." (I am an out, bisexual woman) and sometimes that works. Or I'll say "Would you please not use that word as a swear word?"

It's not a matter of being thin skinned or even PC. It's just being polite. The worst thing the political correctness movement did was to make it uncool to be Polite.

Oh, and thanks for asking this question. So many straight people don't even think about this.

A straight person that uses the word "gay" in that sense, meaning, "lame, despicable, unfavorable, undesirable, distasteful, or loathsome" is a homophobic bigot, and every gayperson should be very deeply offended by such a comment. If you are not offended as a gayperson, you definitely are subservient to heterosexuals and think that heterosexuals are significantly and exponentially much better than you are. Gaypeople might wish that they were straight because of its highly revered perception in society. Have some self-respect, gaypeople! Enjoy your freedom, gaypeople, or whatever it is the heterosexuals have left you with. If the term "gay" is used in that sense, it states that all homosexuals are lame, despicable, unfavorable, undesirable, distasteful, and loathsome when that is to be applied to heterosexuals. Should we call heterosexuals "gay"? Don't allow yourself to mean that, gaypeople.

P.S. Why don't we apply the term "heterosexually gay" to describe something that is stupid and worthless?

I am gay and it does bother me a little, but I think that the majority of people who say it aren't intentionally degrading gay people. It's just another slang phrase that will die out in 5 years.

It bothers me when people use "gay" as a synonym for "stupid" or "worthless." It doesn't bother me so much when someone uses "gay" to describe something that really is gay (e.g., the ice capades, anything by John Waters, etc).

It used to bother me alot but not any more. Mostly when people say that they usually mean that it is very colorful or jolly. SO I don't make a big deal about it any more. It also depends on who is saying it and whether they are really being offensive or not.

You have to really understand people and be very skillful in order to know when to say that without it being offensive to gay people. Gay people usually know exactly when and where it's appropriate. If you're not gay, you should avoid it.

It is a quick and easy way to root out the unintelligent people in a room. Easy way to keep from wasting my time talking to someone who's most likely lame.

I feel there are more creative ways to express if something isn't your preference.

Gay by definition means "happy". This term was universally adopted by homosexuals who came out of the closet; proclaiming they are finally 'happy' rather in the hell of denial.

Uggh...sometimes I wish I were straight. Will you people grow some balls? It's just a damn word. Jesus, who cares?! This question is a good one...but most of the responses are indeed "gay."

Usually it does bother me a little. Not because they mean it badly, but because it means something "weak, or useless." And who wants to be thought of that way?
