Most people had letters of introduction written for them by people who knew the people they hoped to meet.

It wasn't done to simply go up and introduce oneself to a perfect stranger (although on the American frontier this wasn't all that uncommon; our manners have always been freer than those of the Europeans). If you were at a party and saw someone you thought you'd like to become acquainted with, you'd ask around for somebody to introduce you to them if the host or hostess hadn't already done so.

you would present a"card d'visite" with your name emblazoned in roundhand script ;this is a standard sized businesscard of about 2"x 31/2"!!unlike today it would have nothing but your name upon it !!all proper gentlemen carried them!!and all proper ladies carried a fan with which to delicately demure from accepting same with a jesture or movement so finely framed as to almost be undecernible to the untutored eye!!there was a whole "language of the fan"that every lady and gentleman of culture and breeding was supposed to have more than a passing familiarity with!!

People had calling cards as well. You knocked on the person's door and left you card on the card you might have written the name of a mutual acquaintance. You could as well invite the person to luncheon, tea, or dinner
