They prevent war in many cases, but the fact that they must be formed implies that a threat of war exists. The most dangerous scenario is when there are a small amount of alliances and the possibility of war between the powerful alliances.

Well, in an ideal condition, alliances make people and countries stronger, so other powers wouldn't want to start a fight.

However, this strategy backfired just before WW1 when a fight between 2 countries started calling in alliances and soon got the whole planet stuck in a huge war.

i think that an alliance can promote peace as long as you are willing to talk to people you don't have an alliance with, otherwise you just make a bigger fight

It can do both; alliances can prevent two groups from battling each other, but an outsider's alliance with one side of a fight brings more people into the war (like with WWI - Prussia entered the war because of an alliance with Austria-Hungary, thus prolonging the fight).

We all need someone to have our backs. Yet, in politics no motive is clear. The almighty dollar decides if alliances are successful. To answer the question it is a double edged sword. It does both.
