Because when voters cast a ballot, they should vote for the person or party (if they don't know the candidate) they like the best depending on the issues. It doesn't matter if you decide to wirte-in Action Man or Barbie or Mickey Mouse, nobody doesn't have to know who you voted for. Besides, without a secret ballot these days, we'd practically have no elections because politicians would control the whole electoral process! Thanks!

If you mean for elections, then it's because it protects people who might otherwise be pressured to vote a certain way. For example, if a mob boss threathens someone to vote for a supported candidate, the voter is still able to vote anonymously and say that they voted for that person even if they voted for someone else.
