Yes. If you are loyal to one side and one side only - refusing to see the big picture - progress is definitely prevented. Great question! I love the philosophy stuff!

Only loyalty to a closed mind, a set idea, or a specific way of doing something.
Loyalty to a person or group of people is commendable and has no thing to do with ones progress.
All that is needed to prevent progress is to quite ones questions.

Well, let's explore...

1) Loyalty to self -- Following ones best interest honestly and earnestly allows the individual to fully explore their potential which, could be construed, as progress toward self-actualization.

2) Loyalty to benign authority -- By definition, benign authority is authority granted for the advancement of collective concerns. Advancement is just another word for progress.

3) Loyalty to malicious authority -- the opposite of authentic authority, which as described above is concerned with the advancement of the collective good, is therefore the opposite of progress (Congress?)

So, it seems that loyalty only prevents progress 1/3 of the time. I'm sure there could be a much more substantive philosophical discourse on which category Religion falls...

Loyalty may prevent progress because of certain circumstances you may be able to convince the person that you are loyal to; to be able to agree with you. Loyalty isn't always the right choice but being loyal normally will let you have at least 1 friend with you.

Depends to what or whom this loyalty is given and whether it was willingly given or is it a part of some heritage that it becomes compulsory because if one has an opportunity to do something that can enhance the greater good but loyalty to tradition prevents this then progress can be hindered!!!

Loyalty will advance the cause for which we are loyal. However, that same loyalty may impede the progress of the opposition.

Of course. You can be so blinded by loyalty that you can't, or refuse to, see the truth. And truth can lead to progress.

Political parties are a great example of this. There are many people who are 'confirmed' Republicans who would NEVER vote for a Democrat. They would rather vote a criminal or dead man into office as long as he's labeled Republican. When you are so loyal to one label, you disregard anything said by anyone under the other. WIthout contrary point of view and without thought about different ideas, we digress instead of progress. We become stagnant.

Loyalty is an asset.
Blind Loyalty is an impediment.

That which you call progress, may well be a regression in truth which we do not know. ... Loyalty and regression? What do you think? But it leads to recognition of what is what, as minimum....
