Of course you keep them!!
Even if you get 21st Century and scan the item, then get rid of the item itself - you've kept it on your computer!
The last 'souvenir' I can reliably put a date on is actually two smooth stones I picked up, the last time my father was well enough to come to a beach and walk 'our' dog. He made it about half the distance we had been used to walking, then sat down and told me to go on. I picked one up at the creek we used to walk to, the other back where he was sitting. That was Jan, 95. He died in May, 95.

Absolutely! Well, as long as I don't lose any in a move! I have some souvenirs that I picked up while deployed in Laos in 1999. I can't think of any older than that because again, alot of mine got lost!!
