Depending on where you go - 10 pesos will almost buy you a beer in a palapa beach restaurant. 400 pesos should get you a pretty good Mexican style hotel room for the night. Meals can be had for 25 - 100 pesos.

Just stay away from big resorts

Well, I can tell you it is safe. I been running around down there by myself for years. Of course, I do have friends down there....many friends. And I do hang out downtown Cancun. Like anywhere, there is some danger if you are careless. I am not sure about the peso. Use to be 10 to 1, but I think my last trip it was different.....1.00 USD
United States Dollars = 10.8336 MXN now I think.

For conversion rates for moneoy go to onlineconversion.com. I live in Mexico, but not in a tourist area. and it is very safe. if you are in a tourist area, I believe you are at greater risk if you leave the tourist part of the city because you will look like a tourist...therefore a target. When you arrive at your resort, talk to the management. The conversion rate right now is about 10.5 pesos for an American dollar.

It's very safe really, unless you act careless and go to the dodgy areas of any Mexican town. Here's a quickie guide of the actual state of Mexican tourist places:
-Mexico City: The capital right now it's safer than it was during the presidential elections -that took place in July-. The downtown is great to go to museums, art galleries, ballet, theater but not so good to walk around. You see, during december the rate of robberies gets a bit higher in this part of the city.
-Cancun: It has really recovered from the huracan Wilma that practically destroyed it last year. Some people say the beaches aren't as big as they used to be but still they are very very beatiful.
-Puerto Vallarta: Really nice place to hang out in the nights. Very safe and has great clubs. Taxis charge you about 50-70 pesos to give you a lift to your hotel. The beach is a bit rocky, but the weather is just incredible.
-Oaxaca: Though it's the area where more antropologic parks are located, today it's just a bit unsafe due to the strike of the city's teachers' union. If you still wish to go there be sure that you will find very low hotel rates and incredible low prices in almost everything.
-Los Cabos: The most pricey place in Mexico is Los Cabos -even Cancun it's a tiny bit cheaper. Los Cabos has cool sea waters -unlike Cancun- and thicker sands. Great for water sports and whale watching, Los Cabos is now turning to be like a Mini-Hamptons with very fancy and luxurios hotels. This is for me the safest place in Mexico right now.
-Manzanillo: It has thick sands, and cool waters. Very safe and friendly for older tourists or families.
-Guadalajara: Great colonial city, about 4 hours away from Puerto Vallarta. Really safe at this time of the year.
-Monterrey: The most americanized city in Mexico. It's enclosed by a circle of mountains. Very safe unless you're in the drug business. Great for shopping and two hours away from the US border.

What can you buy with 10 pesos?
-Two Pepsis (500 ml each)
-A 1 l bottle of water
-A medium bag of Cheetos
-Two glazed donuts
-A carton of milk
-Half a dozen eggs

Hope I could help you

Went there not so long ago and had a great time at Puerto Valletta. I had not troubles seemed safe to me. There are some places like Nero Laredo and in the News Oxiona or something like that had some unrest after the last presidential election...

Like anywhere there can be spots or "That side of town" that can be not so safe to go. $ 10 US when I went = $ 100 Mexican I seem to remember.

Really prices are similar there as they are in the states and probably canada...

Head On Out for a Great time!!!

Merry Christmas!!!

Safe as any US or Canada city. There's always some bad guys looking to rip you off. Use your brains about driving and walking at night. Its a great country, lots of European influences, architecture, food, fabulous museums. Mexicans like Canadians and your country. Peso was 10.70 to the US dollar yesterday. Go to a big Mexican bank for the exchange. Bien Viaje

I went to Cancun last year with 2 other men. I got the feeling of the old west if you got out of the downtown area. What i mean by that is you are on your own. Its safe in the food areas but i wouldn't want to walk to far at night by myself.

Safest city in Mexico, Aguascalientes, San Miguel de Allende, Morelia, and Guanajuato, I do not know if we are safer than Honduras.
