Hi Gavin,

Yes this is true, the beauty of philosophy is that there are no rules. A philosophical question that asks 'why?' has an infinite amount of connotations and possible answers, as long as the answer has thought behind it then it is valid. 'Why?' is a fundamental issue of philosophy, and if the exam were to ask a question like this, i for one, believe that the examiner cannot penalise for a response just as enigmatic.

If unicorns don't exist, how do they have horns?

I think it's an urban myth about the 'why' exam question. Whereas the unicorn question appeals to a genuine philosophical problem, responding to which the student could demonstrate knowledge of the field and an ability to think philosophically.

I guess so, but he would've found the exam rather boring? Then again somehow I passed my German GCSE after getting the giggles in the oral test and not remembering anything I was meant to say, I fell asleep in the listening test, and was writing 'ich getten inen de showeren' in the writing test... I guess coursework helps a lot!

No, this is an urban legend.
The real answer is: "Why? Because professor thinks that he is being clever, while he is being really stupid by asking irrelevant questions on the exam."
