The doctor will take care, but make sure you say that you are nervous etc and he/she will be extra careful. Take deep breaths and relax, it will help. Its uncomfortable but not painful;

hurt i think is the wrong word. it will b uncomfortable and unless u have a really good gyno the thing they put in u to take the swab test will probably b cold. there is absolutely nothing fun or comfortable about a gyn exam,but it is something u must do at least once a year to make sure u have nothing wrong with u. hopefully ur dr is nice and knows exactly how to treat new girls that have never had an exam before.
good luck honey and remember that it is really a necessary evil that all women of good health must go through.
good luck and happy holidays

The main thing to do is stay calm. Make sure you let the doctor know that you are a virgin and you are nervous. The best thing they will do is make you calm and comfortable. Maybe you should ask for a smaller instrument and it might be better on you. They most likely will walk you through everything. Don't worry you'll be FINE. Every female will be nervous their first time.

Beings that it is your first time they are going to use the smallest. It's not that it hurts it is just uncomfortable. You can hardly feel the clamp, it's just alot of pressure but no pain. That is the only instrument used. The other ones are: a q-tip like swab, a mascara like brush, and the obgyn's fingers. It really isn't painful. The swab and mascara wand will give you a short sharp cramp, but before you know it you are saying ouch and she is done. To be nervous is totally normal. I have been going for 7 yrs now and I get nervous everytime. And everytime it is just as uncomfortable. Good luck hun. You will be fine.

It's will be extremely uncomfortable, but the issue of whether it is painful or not is dependent on you perceive discomfort generally (different strokes for different folks).
You are usually not required to due a pap smear examination if you have never been sexually active, so I'm a bit puzzled. Anyway, the size of the instrument will not make a difference in your level of comfort (breaking the hymen by any method is going to be extremely uncomfortable).

I am a nurse and it will not hurt. You will be fine. They will use a smaller speculum and a lot of lubrication. The doctor will insert 1 finger into your vagina gently before even starting the exam, so she/he knows which speculum to use. It will all be over in less than 60 seconds, so dont worry about it.
You will feel a little bit if gentle manipulation in your vaginal area, but they will take extra care with you.

It shouldn't hurt at all. There will be some pressure but the most of it will be the psychological discomfort. It will be fast too. Just a few seconds or so. My daughter just had to go to hers and she had the same situation.
It does maybe just seem a little strange or weird because it's the first exam. But you'll be fine believe me.

your Dr is trained to know what to do. the exam is never comfortable even when you do use tampons or are sexually active. I can say that it is bareable. You'll do fine. Just learn to relax through it and breath calmly. It's a quick exam and will be over before you know it. Hope I was of some help to you.

well, if you need a gyno exam, then you're having intercourse, and tampons are nothing compared to intercourse. The gyno exam is uncomfortable, but, being tense is the worst thing for it. Just relax, and you'll be fine.
I just want to make it clear though, you shouldn't need a pap test unless you're having intercourse. Talk about this to your doc if you're not.
***just saw your update that you're a virgin. Typically, unless you're having other health problems he needs to check for, the only reason for an internal exam is if you are having sex. Cervical cancer is caused mainly by an STD, and so you shouldn't need to be examined if you haven't been at risk for catching the virus that causes it. Please please please, talk about this fact with your doc. Don't have an unnecessary exam done.

it won't hurt, but it will be uncomfortable. even if u use tampons or are sexually active, it's uncomfortable. but it shouldn't hurt. you can ask for smaller instruments, but usually they start with the smallest one and only use the bigger ones if they really need to. oh, actually on part may hurt a little. they'll "swab" your cervix, and 2 of the swabs are "scrapey" so they'll hurt just a little.
