I have a 99 mercury cougar. Recently, when I hit the gas, the rpm will only hit at about 4500,then it start to jump.(sounds like it has reach it's limit). Is it a easy fix problem? or a big engine problem?

It could have a governor that prevents you from revving the engine past that point. If you hear it cutting out, then revving and then cutting out again it is probably governed to protect the engine.
You should be able to surpass 4500 RPM when in gear though, try it on the road.

gonna be funny when you spit a rod out the side of the engine holding at 4500 rpm. there a rev limiters installed in the computer to limit mph and rpm's

why are u wanting to go higher than 4500 rpm? r u trying to blow it up? this isn't a race car, so leave it alone. Do u wanna go faster? thern trade for a new mustang shelby or other hot model of mustang. I saw a Mach 1 today.. absolutely gorgeous.

My previous jeep truck had a bad, rotten hose and it had come off and that became what it became doing, shifting overdue. i offered the truck and the guy who bought it to me instructed me he had problems with it shifting and so he bought it for much less. I crawled decrease than the truck and checked the hose, and it became off, and rotten. replaced the hose, and it became like new back. yet i do no longer understand in the adventure that your automobile has the comparable set up. in simple terms theory i could point out it.

Yeah, I was also thinking it could be the rev limiter....it's hard to troublshoot, take it to a garage and have them look at it. :)

well first we need more info.... second you could have a fouled plug... sounds like a V6...
