a wish bone hmmm how to explain

ok to keep it simple

you wheel is secured to the car at two points via the shock absorber, (top of car) and lower arm (wiishbone)(bottom of the car) these meet together at the hub9 the bit you wheel bolts on to

as you can expect these parts move as the car bounces along the road but they are bolted securly to the car, so flexible rubber bushes are use to allow this

throu time these wear and allow the joints to move( not good)

and need to be replaced .

if you drive a ford fiesta a new lower arm costs £15 from an auto parts dealer

if you drive a v8 ranger rover you are probably talkin around £400

what do you drive? have a think and deceide if you are being ripped off

if u leave it it will get worse and the handling of the car will be impared

its also an mot failure

Depends on what car.
A wishbone is the lower front suspension arm, where there are two inboard pivots and a single outboard fixing, most "Wishbones" are actually correctly described as Lower Arms or A frames.
If the bush wears the front wheel alignment will vary over a considerable range and cause weird handling and tyre wear and a nasty accident when it detatches completely from the structure of the car . £ 400 sounds very expensive, £50 for parts and an hours labour should cover it but there may be a particular problem on your vehicle, the bolts may have seized and sheared off and need drilling out and the threads re tapping or welding may be needed. If the wheel alignment has not been altered recently it will probably be OK when the bush is done but check afterwards, the steering wheel should be "Straight" centre bar horizontal etc when going down a straight bit of motorway and the steering should turn an equal number of turns and angle to left and right, if it does not something is wrong., probably something, the Wishbone? is bent.

The wishbone is a major component of the front suspension/steering/ wheel alignment/ but rather complicated to give you the full technical jargon but believe you me, worn bushes is an MOT FAILURE as a breakup of it could render a vehicle DANGEROUS. It's not so much the cost of the part, more the expertese and time taken to fit it. £400 seems a fair price if a reputable dealer/garage. Back street, FORGET IT ! A.B. PS. A bush is normally a piece of rubber or nylon that stops two metal parts from touching or rubbing each other when movement is required.

I believe what you are writing about is a front wishbone bushing? If it is the bushing repair can be expensive. the part is usual not that much but the labour and the alignment can add up fast. This part is part of the suspension so if it worn out get it replaced. You may have heard car adds stating the car has a double wish bone suspension .

That sounds expensive, the bush itself is probably only £20, maybe they want to change the whole wishbone and £60 - £150 might be the price of that, labour would only be an hour.
I would get it changed though cause your handling will be poor if it is broken. Try a backstreet garage not a dealer.
