Some of the examples cited above are correct, but I think we are overlooking the fact that imperialism was often aided by disease and weak Native immune systems. North America, South America and Oceania had been isolated from the 'Old World' for millenia. As a result, the most powerful weapons the newcomers wielded were viruses and bacteria. Africa and especially Asia, proved harder nuts to crack because they had been exposed to the same diseases that Europeans had been forced to endure and, therefore, they had similar immune responses. Do not underestimate the impact this could have on a people's ability to mount an effective defense.

The British tried to conquer and incorporate Afghanistan into the Empire. However, geography prevented the British from militarily conquering the country. In one case an entire British army was destroyed by the Afghans.

countries such as japan were able to resist imperialism b/c they could mainstain their infrastructure w/o contact from imperialistic nations....plus the few nations who withstood imperialism usually had a good military or navy backing them

Well, China simply didn't allow merchants to penetrate beyond coastal cities. The African slave traders did the same thing for years. They simply killed or captured anyone who tried to go beyond a defined trade area. Eventually resistance crumbled, but it worked for a while.
