Why do companies keep making the original version of their product after they start making the extra strength? Why would anyone buy the inferior, weaker product?

There isn't a standard here, and it depends on the product and company you are talking about.

Extra strength cold medicine or pain reliever - Some people are going to stay away from that if they 1) are giving it to children, 2) have to work or drive 3) find medicines effect them more 4) are elderly and effected by the dosage, 5) taking other drugs too 6) are under weight, etc. And the regular costs less.

It is a good chance for the company to put out 2 products and maybe steal away some extra market shares.

Soaps usually advertise things like that with very little change in the product. Sometimes it is just that the store has some of the old product in stock. But even here, if you are someone with sensitive skin, and found a brand that works for you, you would still stay away from the new extra strength formula and try stick to the regular one that you trust.

Extra strength sounds too strong for some.
