Try connecting it directly to the PC in a spare USB socket... Not through the card reader.
Also, you may not need to, but did you install anything that cam on a disk with the camera?
Finally, if you find the Adobe website, they have a free program called "Photoshop Album Starter". Install this program and whenever you plug in your camera, it sees the pictures, lets you download them, even sort them into albums and folders... Then even asks if you want to erase them from the camera... It's quite a handy bit of software and makes life much easier!

More than one ways to download the pictures from your Digital Camera to your pc.
1. The easiest way is to have the software that came with your camera, installed on your pc. That way, when you connect your cam to the pc using the usb cable, the s/w will kick off and will guide you through the download process. Using the s/w is particularly useful, because it marks the images that have been already downloaded, so that next time you connect the camera to the pc, it will download only the ones that have not been downloaded.
2. If you haven't installed the s/w for some reason, you can still download the pics - just connect the camera to the pc, using the usb cable. Then open the Windows Explorer, click on 'My Computer' and look for the icon of your camera. Double click and open the camera icon - it will open up like a common windows folder and will show you all the images stored on the memory card. You can from there just copy the images (select and ctrl+c) and paste them in a folder of your choice on your pc.
3. You can remove the memory card and put it in a memory card reader on your pc - if your pc has one. Nowadays, most pcs come with 5 in 1 memory card reader ports, that can take all sorts of memory cards - SD, XD, Flash, Sony Memory Stick, etc.
For the 1 and 2 above, you must have your camera driver installed on your pc. If you have Windows XP, most likely the driver would already be present on the pc, so when you plug in your camera, you will see a small bubble on the task bar saying 'New Hardware Found' and momentarily, the message will change to 'Your new hardware is installed and ready to use'. Once your camera becomes ready to use, you can use 1/2 above to download the pics.

plug the usb cable into your camera the other end into the usb port..the computer will find the camera , found new hardware, once that is done you will get a pop up asking you what media to use. if you using a usb card reader make sure the driver is loaded on to the system
the best way to find out if the card reader is working, is Unplug it from the computer, reboot the system plug in the card reader it should say found new hardware, if it do then it is working... if working then insert the card then it will say found new media if it is winXP pick the top choice click on it and it will show you the pictures on the camera

To use the card, after the light comes on, go to "My Computer". You should have a new "Removeable" disk drive. Just copy/paste or drag/drop the pictures on to your hard drive. To get the camera to work as you expected, you must install the program that came with the camera. It should have been furnished with the camera on a CD or there should be directions for downloading and installing the software in the setup instructions. Bert

your pc will immediately read the device that has been plugged into its usb port. the computer would ask what would you want to do with the new found device thru a dialog box with lots of options to choose from or if there is a specific software for your digicam, it will accomodate you thru the whole process.

Ok, well on mine, when I insert the card, some options pop up on the screen. If that doesn't happen for you, all you have to do is go to my computer and open it and go from there. Email or IM if you need more help
