congratulations ! the 20 weeks scan is really good, the only downside to it is that they expect u to drink a whole load of water, so that your bladder is full when they do the scan ! it can be slightly uncomfortable, laid on one of those silly little examination tables whilst someone is pressing down on your abdomen ! i think it's a good idea to find out the sex during the scan. i wanted to know, not that i minded what sex my child was, but because i wanted to know what colour to paint the nursery, and whether or not to buy clothes for a little boy or a girl. good luck. hope it all goes well.

Yes that is correct. The 20 weeks scan usually can last up to an hour, as this is when the tech looks at all the organs and systems of the baby to confirm there are no problems. This includes counting toes and fingers. The bones are very easy to see and you may even be able to see some tissue structures, such as ears and lips. The baby will more than likely move around on it's own which will help the tech, or the tech will try to lightly poke the baby to get him/her to move and allow the better view of an organ. I was luckly in that my baby cooperated that day and we were able to see the sex--a girl. As far as whether it is a good idea or not to find out the sex is a personal choice. I did only because it makes it a lot easier to buy for the baby :). Also, check with your doctor if they do videos or moving picutres on a cd which you can take home to show family and friends. Good Luck and Enjoy. It's a great experience!!

How long your scan will last will depend a lot on where you are having it. If you are in the US or going private, you will be there for a while. But NHS scans are quite functional. I had my 20 week scan on Friday and it lasted about 10 minutes - she just did her measurements and I was out of there!
They should be able to tell you the sex provided the baby isn't lying in an awkward poisition. Again, with a private scan they will give the baby time to move, with the NHS they won't spend any extra time looking!
I chose not to find out the sex because I think that there aren't many beautiful surprises in life, but there is when you have a baby and don't know what it is. But it's a very personal choice.
You will love the scan though - it's great fun and lovely to see your baby.

I've had quite a few scans (and babies)...always exciting. But I had it made quite clear to me that a scan would never guarantee to tell you the sex of the baby. Thats not what its about. Even when they think they may be right, I was told there's a chance it may be the opposite sex, so they didn't like to give an opinion. Scans are basically to check on the health aspect of the baby. ps I've never wanted to know in advance what sex the baby is...its a bit like unwrapping the xmas present in advance and finding out what you've got!!!

At 20 wks your baby looks like a baby and an ultrasound will show everything including the heartbeat. With my first, I started crying. It was so amazing to finanly see the baby that had been growing inside me for 5 months. Finding out the sex is completely up to you. If you arent sure when you go to the ultrasound: have the tech write it on a piece of paper and put it in an envelope. That way you can wait till you are sure if you want to find out. I did with both my previous pregnancies but this one we may wait. Since its our last: we want to know what hearing "Its a Boy" or "It's a girl" feels like in the delivery room :) Well Congrats and Good Luck.

The scan is basically the first image you will have of your little one! You do see all the little fingers, toes etc, and you even get to see what your little ones face looks like. It is absolutely precious. They will definately beable to tell you the sex of baby, and I have always wanted to know. It somehow makes it nicer refering to the little one as she or he, rather than it!! Also makes preparing for baby a little more special, as you can buy the little dress, or get blue!! Enjoy .... and do expect tears of absolute joy!!

It's awesome! You're going to love it!! You can even see things like the heart beating, the kidneys, lungs and even the ribs and spine. I chose to know the sex so we knew what kind of stuff to get, plus I'm too impatient and couldn't wait the entire 40 weeks to find something like that out! Good luck :)
