Whenever I call about my courses, they just give me the run around. Doesn't anyone do any work? Or is their main duty to transfer you to another department?

Well, they tend to be under staffed bureaucratic departments! in many instances, they try to clap but the left hand is not too sure of what the right hand is doing! hence the run around effect.
In a college, your program coordinator is the best resource you may have. And it will help if you keep yourself well informed as well. Many students contact me (am working in a college) while they have the info in their academic calendar or in their email box but they did not read it and expect ME to do the reading for them (very frustrating as well) If they get you running around that much, and you are sure of what you are doing / requesting, ask to speak to the registrar! that person should help as well.

Often, there are too many students for them to care. What are you calling about? Maybe you're calling the wrong place or not explaining what you want well enough causing them to transfer you somewhere else because they can't help you.

Good question. I'm sure it's frustrating for the people who work there too because probably no one knows what's going on. I know I've experienced the same problem at my university. Ugh.
