the mazda 3 has a inline 4 engine with front wheel drive (bleh) and the 6 has the V6 engine with front wheel drive as well (still bleh). The mazdaspeed 3 has a turbo 4 cylinder and 6 speed trans axle front wheel drive arrangement. the mazdaspeed6 has a 6 speed transaxle and is all wheel drive (better, but still not RWD how it should be).

Well the first thing is the price. The 2007 Mazda3 starts at $14,390 while the Mazda6 starts at $19,725. The Mazda3 is available with a 2.0 liter 148-hp I4, a 2.3 liter 156-hp I4 and a 2.3 liter 263-hp turbocharged I4. It's also available in sedan and hatchback versions. Don't forget the high-revving MazdaSpeed3 which can hit 162 mph. The Mazda6 on the other hand is available with the same 2.3 liter I4, a 3.0 liter V6 and the turbocharged I4, which is only available on the MazdaSpeed6. The Mazda6 is also available in sedan, 5 door and wagon version.

Mazda 6 has a bigger engine. Is more of the luxury version of the 3. Although the 3 offers navigation and the 6 doesn't. The 3 also get about 10 additional miles to the gallon than the 6. I have personally owned a 3 and I think it is a wonderful car. Smooth ride, no mechanical issues, does great in the snow.

I own a 2005 Mazda 6i and I bought it as a dealer demo, (some sales guy had been driving it around), its the basic 2.3 4 cylinder with no upgraded but its a great car.
I looked at the 3 and found it to be pricey for what you get, not to mention most of them have a lot of options already on them, while you can get a 6 pretty basic. I was looking to save money, so this appealed to me.
There's a lot of Mazda 6's out there, and to me there were more options and variety than what was available with the Mazda 3.
I went to three Mazda stores when I bought mine and compared the two models and simply on price alone, went with the 6, though its a fun car to drive, very good on fuel and its not stripped down.
Check the two out for yourself and see which is right for you.
