If you a patient in a hospital, rather than asking for it at home, it cost less than if a medical company is mixing it for home use.. Recently, I had a patient who was on home TPN and I believe it was $250 a day. It also included lipids.
The easiest way for you to figure it out is to call an agency who supplies TPN formula's for home use and ask them the cost. They will tell you up front and make sure you tell them you are un insured. It makes a difference. It is higher for the uninsured, and I am not really sure. I live in Illinois. State to state their are differences too.
Nursing homes accept pts on TPN and usually it is figured into the cost of the nursing home stay.
If you are un insured, you should apply for medicaid and if you are medicare eligible, I think it only pays for it if you are in a nursing home or a hospital unless their are extenuating circumstances.
At any rate TPN is not cheap.

it depends on were you live
who supplies it
is in in hospital or home care
each bag is prepared by a pharmacist with the specific ingredients prescribed by the physician for you
so it varies by by all these factors but it is expensive
you also have to have it administered by a Rn so if you are at home
there is the expense of a nurse coming to hang the tpn and take it down
if gastrostomy tube feeds are an option in your case although you have to have the procedure to insert the tube
the feedings are pre prepared and you can easily learn as many people do to do it your self

I buy the powder formula which costs less then the can stuff. I find that it lasts me 1 week for a big can and that cost me 15 - 25 bucks. Look around the stores and find the cheapest price and stick with that store. I find Walmart is cheapest here in canada.

haha, i was at cancer treatment center of america, tulsa, i had tpn everyday for 2 weeks and got disgusted with bags and needles...i thought it would be 500 a bag. well it wasn't, it was over 4000.00 a bag...i asked the tpn nurse what else i could do, she said drink boost...i am not saying that would work for everyone...but i said fine, i'd rather drink boost than continue what i thought was 500.00 bag of stuff....
