I really want 1 or 2 oscars but I only have a 10 gallon tank. Will oscars not grow really big if they are kept in a smaller tank? I saw some at Petsmart that were only about 2-3 inches long. Anyone that knows anything about them or has some please help!? Thanks!!

For a while. Most fish will only grow to adapt to their tank. Oscars included. BUT they will get too big. My sister had two and they did "ok" but they really need more room than you think.

I'd say for the time being keep the fish, enjoy it. When it gets "too big" talk to the pet store where you purchased the fish, they have been known to make a trade.

A 10 gallon is much too small for an oscar.
The myth that fish won't outgrow their tank is just that - a myth. If they don't outgrow the tank, it'll be because they die before they can grow.

Oscars will grow to over 10 inches. The 1 inch per gallon is totally bogus. Could you even fit a 10 inch fish into a 10 gallon tank? And what do you think takes up more room and causes more waste - 10 one inch neon tetras, or one 10 inch oscar?

One oscar needs a MINIMUM of 60 gallons, 75 is better, because a large adult oscar will be longer than a 50 gallon is deep!

So, save your pennies, and save up to get a nice big oscar tank sometime in the future.

For oscar 55 is the bare minimum for 1 and even that is stretching it. DO NOT use the 1 inch per gallon "rule." Use a little common sense. Oscars grow to around 14 inches if cared for properly. Even if they are only 8 inches long how in the heck are they going to swim around in a tiny little 16 gallon tank? Yes, they will grow to the sixe of their environment but it is extremely unhealthy for the fish. Look up stunting and see what I mean. If you want 2 oscars you will need at least 125 gallons.

You need a bigger tank Its a fallacy that they only grow to their tank size. Some Oscars can grow to 8 or 9 ins which is a big fish!
Work out the size tank you need.... 1 inch of (full grown!!) fish needs 1 gallon of water. So 2 x 8 inch fish need a minimum of 16 gallons in their tank;

Oscars are not only big, but also strong and meaty. In addition, they're very messy. A 10 gallon is completely unsuitable, there isn't enough room for it to grow properly or do anything but float around and not move, and as it gets bigger you'll never be able to keep the conditions clean. Can you keep one in a 10 gallon? Sure, but it's a lousy home for it and it will die prematurely.
