There are two explanations. One, that the Eradicator placed his body in a Kryptonian regeneration tank in order to keep it fresh so that he could use it as a battery to power himself, since he was no longer able to absorb solar energy directly. The tank essentially resuscitated him, since his superhuman physiology enabled him to stave off brain death for much longer than a human possibly could. In addition, STAR Labs exposed his body to solar energy while experimenting on it, without which he might have truly died before the Eradicator came and took it.
The other explanation is that Pa Kent had a heart attack, during which his spirit travelled to the afterlife in search of Clark, and when he found his son he gave him the courage to return to his body.

He died after fighting Doomsday. Of course he knocked Doomsday out before succumbing to his injuries and dying in the arms of Lois Lane. Then there was a funeral and for a few months there were other supermen, 4 in fact, a Superboy clone, a guy in a metal suit, a cyborg, and the other one. Then DC decided they had milked his death for long enough and brought him back like comics and soap operas do. It was Superman issue 75 btw, and on a seperate note if you have ever watched the Justice Leage cartoon they handled it so much better, Doomsday crashes through the city and "bad" Superman burns through his brain with his heat vision and labotomises him. Quite humorous actually.

he caught chuck norris in bed with lois lane and refused to apologize to chuck for interrupting him, as such chuck was forced to roundhouse kick superman, promptly killing him, but even more powerfull than that it sent his soul into different heroes, creating different versions of superman.
Chuck at some point figured superman had learned his lesson and used his beard to sew them back together.
Today chuck bones lois twice a week while superman watches tv in the other room.

No it wasn't... he didn't die. He looked sad because he had missed out on the first 5 years of his son's life and will never be able to have a "real" life with his own son....

In 1992/1993 he was 'killed' in hand to hand combat with Doomsday.
Doomsday was a creature of pure rage and Homicidal urges that was Buried in Ohio(I never read how he got there ore from where)
Doomsday woke up, and broke out, his first action, was tp kill a little finch
Doomsday created havoc, Justice League was called in.
Justice League got beat down, Called in Superman
Superman fought Doomsday to Metropolis, caused massive destruction.
They fought to what was assumed a mutual death on the street in front of the Planet while Lois watched and Jimmy took pictures.
Superman was buried inder a large statue in what was intended to be a Time Capsule in Metropolis' equivilant to NYC's Central Park.
Cadmus, a genetic research arm of the Govt. stole the body, attempted to clone him
SuperGirl retrieved the body, destryed the research, put him back in his tomb.
A cadmus Scientist, had been making illegal copies of the research, his records survived
Superboy was created with that research and some left over Lex DNA from when he had a new younger body(Lex II) Grown by yet another Corrupt cadmus Dr.
After it was returned, Eradicator(E) stole it and took him to the Fortress(E was still an energy being, and formed his body that looked like Kal-el, by stealing mass from the sarcophagus)
In the Fortress Kal-el was put in a regeneration pod, and used as a battery by E.
E charged up off Kal-el and went to Metropolis in a new suit with a Visor(his eyes were weak) and the giant metalich S sheild on the chest.
E would often kill any criminal and once broke a safe crackers arms, every bone from elbow to finger tip.
Steel was John Henry Irons, a high steel worker, who Superman had saved after he risked his life to save a co worker.
John Irons had been a Military weapons designer, and had quit, and before Superman saved him that day he had pondered suicide
With Superman's Death, Irons vowed to take up some of the slack created, and became Steel to clean up the Ghetto's from gang weapons
Cyborg Superman was a deranged Earth Scientist who mutated to be able to interface and bond with machinery who ha dfled earth after going insane, and blaming Superman for all his issues
Cyborg S-man pretended to be good, but was in fact the point man( and leader) of Mongul's forces in a plan to recreate War World on Earth
While Kal-el was regenerating, and thought dead by the world, John Kent had a heart attack and a near death experience, in which he met Clark and helped him to see he wasn't dead yet.
Superman woke up when his energies caused the regeneration pod to release him , and he climbed into a 'mech' and it walked him to Metropolis where he met Steel, Superboy, and Supergirl(the parallel universe one with the shape shifting powers).
Lois was there and he proved he was really himself, but was still only human.
Eradicator was betrayed by the Cyborg, and he went to the fortress and sucked all of its power to heal himself
Supeman, Superboy, Supergirl, and Steel went west to stop the Cyborg
E eventually met up with them
When the fight was over E recharged Superman at the expense of his own life.
Supergirl worked her powers an dreturned his suit to normal.
