As a former supervisor for Cingular I can tell you that they are very strict depending on your credit score. If it's horrible you may have to pay up to $1000.00, but the most common one I saw was $250. The only time I saw $1000.00 was if someone didn't have a social security number, or if the social they gave was invalid. If you credit isn't so good you might try calling t-mobile, they have what is called a smart access plan, which will help you build your credit, and still have a good calling plan, and the highest deposit I have seen for that is $150.00.

By and large most people do not have to pay one, unless they've had a bankruptcy in the last 7 years or something. In these cases, I've heard anywhere from $50 to $750 but I'm not sure how recent this was. When I worked for Sprint over 6 years ago their largest was $200. As long as you make all your payments on time, you'll get it back after a year I believe.
