Nacimiento: Nativity. It usually refers to the scene of the Nativity, using either clay (or other material) dolls or real people. (Literal translation: birth).

Navidad: Christmas.

Nochebuena: Christmas Eve. It's also the Mexican name for the flower "poinsettia." (Literal translation: good night).

Virgin de Guadalupe: Virgen de Guadalupe. It's the image of the virgin that appeared to Juan Diego in the Tepeyac, in modern Mexico City. It's a dark-skinned virgin Mary, and according to tradition, she appeared on a hill that was sacred for the Aztecs. It was where their main goddess lived (Tonantzin).

Los Reyes Magos: The three wise men. Melchor, Gaspar and Baltazar were the 3 wise men. They came to visit Jesus when he was a baby, and brought 3 presents for him: gold (to symbolize his condition as a king) , frankincense (to symbolize his condition as a priest) and myrrh (to symbolize his condition as martyr). (Literal translation of "reyes magos" is "wise kings").

Posada: The literal translation of this word is "Inn." It's actually what we call the ceremony that represents Joseph and Mary trying to find a place to stay before Jesus' birth. "Posadas" in Mexico start on Dec. 16th, with the last posada happening on Dec. 24th. A group of people carrying the pilgrims (clay statues of Joseph and Mary) sing some songs trying to get into a house. People inside the house respond singing as well. After a few back and forth songs, the people inside the house finally open the door, the people outside come in, and everybody parties together with a piñata, candy, dinner, etc. Before they start partying, they usually pray the rosary for a while.

Misa de Gallo: It's the mass that happens on Christmas Eve. Gallo means rooster, and this mass is called this way because it was originally celebrated at dawn. Now it's celebrated the night before Christmas.

Piñata: It's a paper mache box, in the shape of a star, Santa Claus, a cartoon character, or almost anything imaginable. They used to be made with clay pots and decorated also with colorful paper. That has stopped probably because the clay pot would fall on people after it broke. Piñatas originally represented evil and sin, and people (especially kids) would take turns to beat them with a stick, until they broke... releasing all their contents for everybody to grab. Piñatas used to be filled with oranges and sugar cane. This has changed overtime as well, and now they are filled with candy and toys (or coins, sometimes).

Juan Diego: He is the native Mexican whom the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared to on Dec 9-12, 1531. He was recently canonized by John Paul II.

El Año Nuevo: The New Year.
