Everyone wants cleaner air so catalytic converters are a necessary evil.

To answer your main question. Cat. convertors use ceramic and platinum cores that are heated by the exhuast or some other means to create a chemical change in the exhuast gas. This change seperates the atoms in carbon monoxide to less harmful gases for the enviroment. It's been awhile, so I can't tell you the end result exactly. There are many high performance cat. convertors on the market with decent prices. Putting convertors on the car will help pass emissions tests and help to save the enviroment too!

A Cat convertor filters out Hydrocarbons, which is unburned fuel, a properly working cat convertor will lower your horsepower by less than 1/2 a horsepower, not to worry. You will not see or feel any difference with or with out one, without your car will be louder. With a 1981 car you need one, I reccomend a high flowing cat covertor, they are on ebay for around $40-$50

Skinnyveg,
Listen to me good, that converter is very expensive and thats usually why when they burn out people don't put new ones back on. The converter is in line with your exhaust system. It's job is to reburn the exhaust so that it does't pollute so much. That car will not pass inspection until that converter is replaced. This is a kind reminder.

You need to make sure the cat has failed first got to an mot station and get the emissions checked and see whats happening in the engine, the engine management system might be at fault for causing this, and why £350 ? you dont need to buy a vauxhall cat you can go to an exhaust centre and they will get you one from another manufacturer Bosal for instance is a good aftermarket brand, aslo the stuff in a tin, forget it not many of these so called wonder products work

an emissions device on your exhaust system

IF YOU HAVE AN EMISSIONS TEST IT IS AN AUTOMATIC FAILURE

the converter consist of a catalyst ( platinum alloy ) that reacts with unburned pollutants in your exhaust and causes a chemical reaction that heats them to the burning point therefore giving a cleaner less polluting exhaust

Basically, a cat conv. is a secondary muffler that converts engine exhaust gases into a less harmful gases into the air by the time it comes out of the tail-pipe.

It's an environmentally friendly way of filtering your exhaust fumes. It also lowers your horse power slightly, which is why all the rednecks take theirs off. LOL. The price depends on the type of car. Here is a link with prices: http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?UseCase=C001&UserAction=loadPage

not sure but i think it's illegal not to have one on your car in some states. it keeps the pollution/emissions from the car to a minimum. i think you can buy one a/r where i live for about 80 bucks. but i live in ky. check a/r for prices and labor for putting it on. if its not too high it would prbably be worth it

it is a device they use to quite the exhaust system, and to clean up the environment. I don't think they cost too teribly much though.
