Looking for a job in the Raleigh, NC, but alot of agencies offer "Contract" jobs - what does "Contract" mean?

Contract typically means that you'll be working for a set period of time and under the terms agreed to in the "contract."

Either you will work for the contractor or you will be on contract to work for the company.

One good thing to know is how long the work/contract is for - sometimes the job announcement lists it as : no longer than (NLT) 2 years or NTE (not to exceed) 2 years.

Each one is unique.
