99 ford taurus leaking transmission fluid from front of transmission.?

The car is running fine. it is not slipping or binding. the car started smoking and i pulled over and there was a streak of fluid that lead to a large puddle of fluid. The car still goes in all gears smooth but is still leaking. Can I replace the front ring without dropping the transmission? is there anything I should check for before that is done?

Front pump seal. Seen a few of those go bad and yeah, you gotta drop the tranny.

Sounds like the front pump seal is going out. The taurus is known for the tranny being bad.
