There's this plaza in my city and its rather big there are many shops on it and it issurrounded by roads on 3 sides and there is a "green strip" between the road and plaza parkings. On 2 sides there are lawns and trees and the third side there is a trench for water runoff.

For a few years, there have been wild trees growing in and around the trench (pine saplings, and hardwood saplings) It looked like there could have been some nice forest regeneration there.

Recently a crew came by and mowed all that growth down....now it's bare again. VERY UPSETTING...

WHY DID THEY DO THAT?

the area they cleared is NOT suitable for any construction it's a deep trench about 50 feet vide, which could have been a wooded area...that could be nice

if it is 'in' or around the trench that is in likelihood a waterway/runoff area... it was probably to keep it flowing or usable. the trees would have caused it to be filled with roots and other growth, making it not work as well.

Little trees grow to be big trees, their roots might have eventually disrupted the paving, and when big enough, they might be a danger in a storm (falling), and they might have affected the drainage in that area causing all kinds of problems.
