Everything is dangerous when you get right down to it- sitting in this chair next to an open window is dangerous to me. What if some psychotic killer decided now would be the perfect time to throw a knife through my window?

I think that if they enjoy it, it would be selfish of their families to make them stop.

Well yeah they are being selfish. They only do it for the rush the get. Its just as sad as any drug habbit. It would be alot different if there wasn't much risk involved. But there are other things to compare with this. I mean you wouldn't be asking this question if it was to study an area in the world or something. If it is important to them just like whatever is important to you. But I still think its very selfish cause they may not come back. Not only that but you don't get to come along most of the time and therefore only makes it valid to themselves.

Heh the real question would be to me, Can a family actually be selfish? I mean they are your life.

Yes of course. Although who can say how their relationships are to begin with. There is a couple of American mountain climbers (husband and wife) that went climbing somewhere in China that are lost. No one has heard from them. Obviously they both understand the lure of dangerous behavior since they do it together.

I don't understand how a normal person married to a climber (or BASE jumper) can tolerate it but if the person dies doing what they feel compelled to do I guess the other person just moves on with their life...

Yes they are. They are risking their lives just for an adrenaline rush and not thinking about the heartache their family and/or children will endure if they end up dying due to their selfishness. I would compare it to an alcoholic or a drug addict. They don't care about the consequences just as long as their getting their fix.

No, I don't think so. The person wants to have fun doing what they like. While the family may not like it, I don't think it's selfish to risk your own life. The family would be heartbroken if the person died, but it was still their choice. The family has to live with it.

From People.

Adrenalin junkies and drug addicts are addicts. Addiction is the question. Is adrenalin addiction hurting the ones you love? Just don't get addicted to ANYTHING
