My dad works full-time on salary and his pay day is on the 1st and 15th on the month. With the new year approaching, his boss has informed him that because banks, etc. will be closed January 1st, he will not be paid until January 2nd, 2007; is this legal in Ontario (Canada)?

I'm trying to locate documentation stating otherwise...

Thanks for your help.

If he doesn't like it then tell him to find a new job. Alternatively he can move to Cuba, Venezuela or North Korea, the last bastions of communism on the globe. Canada is (more or less) a capitalist country.

It is common practice to pay wages on the next business day when a scheduled pay day falls on a holiday or weekend.
I do payroll for the company I work at and we only get paid once a month - on the 1st. If the first falls on a Saturday then we dont get paid until Monday the 3rd.

You can find this information on the government of canada website. It is perfectly legal as employers are unable to pay employees on a day that is a holiday as all financial institutions are closed. even if the employer paid your dad on the 1st the financial institution wouldn't recongnize it until they opened on the 2nd.

Yes, it's legal, why not? The government does not set his paydays his job does. They can change them when they like! What's the big deal?
