This probably sounds like a silly question!

I've always washed all of my laundry in the coldcold water setting. When are you supposed to use the other two settings...cold and hot water?

actually your best bet is to follow whatever the label says

cold for dark colors
warm for pastels
hot for whites and towels

all should be cold rinse also

Use Hot water for whites and towels. You can use the warm water setting for just about everything. Cold water is good for dark colored clothing, it minimizes fading.

The only things I was in hot are whites(husbands-t-shirts) and towels.
Warm I wash colored t-shirts and jeans.
Cold I wash better clothing and delicates.
