Which is better: Family dinners or restaurant dining? What are some consequences---economic, gendered, cultural, etc.---of frequent dining out (restaurant dining)? Is it better to return to family dinners at the dinner table or to dine at restaurants? Why?

I prefer restaurant dining because it means less work for me! Cons of restaurant dining are that is can be costly, more time consuming, less intimate and you can't control what ingredients are really in your food (leading to allergies, weight gain, etc.). Another con might be the gender issue when men are expected to pay for the meal. It could introduce a new dynamic in a relationship based on how the couple handles it. Cons of family dining at home are that it is more work, everyone generally eats the same thing so you can't please everyone, you have to clean up and your meals are limited to the family cook's knowledge/experience.

I personally like the family sit down dinners at home better, but they are harder to acheive. Everyone's schedule in my family is different - I work at night, my mother works 9-5 and my father usually works 7a-3p. We only get to eat together as a family maybe once a week.

Eating dinners out all the time will also contribute to higher weight and overall bad health, not to mention the fact that it will put a big dent in your paycheck. You also don't get that whole family atmosphere where you can go over each person's day and such.

i would do a balanced combination. fsmily dinners are always very important. i dont know if you have heard the statement "familys that eat together stay together". restaurant eating is good too but dont make it habbit. restaurant food can be more fattening and unhealthy. home cooked meals can be better for you if you maked a balanced meal. i know when i was younger i have better memories when eating together as a family. more fonder memories come from home cooked meals. i think more kids crave moms home cooked meals.

If you can afford it, eat out every night! Besides, restaurants (not fast food, of course) today have found better ways to prepare and serve food in a more healthy manner. Less salt and fat, using more flavorful ways to serve great food. Bring the kids and have fun!

Family dinners around the table are key to a bond within a family unit.
Those who say they "can't" cook are full of crap.
It's more like they WON'T cook, or are too lazy to do so.
It's really not rocket-science people, come on, gimme a break !!

I have two small children. Dining out is more trouble than it is worth. I'd rather cook and do dishes than try to keep to small kids entertained.
