Why are they called "windbreakers"?

Are we supposed to fart while wearing them? Are they for wearing around people who eat excessive abounts of cabbage?

I always wondered that myself, because they are supposed to ward off the wind; and if you are wearing one of those and the wind blows, it comes right through the dang jacket. lol
