One thing I did a few years ago or my parent's was this. I was having a hard time finding something in the stores to give them and while there were things they wanted, I wanted my gift to be personal and from the heart. At the time I was 30 years old and what I did was drafted on Word a memory I had for each year of my life. I titled it "Thirty memories of Mom and Dad" Each year I wrote about a special memory with them...for example for age 1 ( of course there is no memory ) I wrote " My first memory is foggy and gray, it is ofme and my parent's probably at play" for age 4 " Dad taking me to the park to learn how to skate, for me it was time spent with Dad like a very special date" Anyway, some were about my mom and some about my dad and some of them together. Every one of course is special. When I finally finished all 30 memories, I printed it out on very nice stationery and had it matted and framed very nicely.
I can tell you when they opened the gift, they thought it was just a frame at first, but oh my God when they realized and read it there were tears on their faces. I think it was probably the most special gift I had ever gven them and it was really nice for me to make it as it brought back alot of memories of happiness.

Kids can make coupons that they're parents can use. For example, they could write "Walk the dog" on one of them. If their parents want them to walk the dog one day, the rip the coupon out of the book the kids make and use it. You can also make ones that say, "Play with younger sibling, Help out with dinner, Help clean up, Pick up your room" etc. Kids can also make these mugs that they color in the piece of paper and then you slip the paper into the cup, which the parents could use for their morning coffee. There are plates that children can write on a piece of paper and you send it to a company who puts the image on the plates. Children can go to a ceramics store and paint a ceramic figurine for their parents. They also sell kids knitting sets and learning to sew and stuff which kids can do. Kids could also just paint a picture of the family, or create a photo album and write captions for the pictures. There are a ton of things kids could make, just be creative!
