I have so many Christmas memories.
But one is funny for me :)) When I was little I lived with my grandparents, my aunt and my smaller sister because my parents traveled a lot and one Christmas...when my parents were also there i remember that my grandparent dress up like Santa :))) we were little and we thought is real Santa until I saw my grandparent shoes :)))) Every body start laughing...I was very confused but that Christmas was one of my favorite Christmases :))
But you know I still believe in Santa.

Haha it makes me smile just thinking about it.. We have home videos of me, my sister, and my mom (my dad was filming it) one year at Christmas in my old house. I was only like 2 and I was wearing my cute little footie PJs, and my hair was messed up since I had just woken up- it looked like I had a mullet! :) My mom would help me open a present, I'd stare at it cluelessly for a minute, then when I finally understood and started to get into it and play with it, she'd hand me another one to open. I was soo confused!! It was adorable, though. It's one of my favorite home videos.

There was another home video of a few years after that, I was probably like 6 or something, and we were at the new house (the one I live in now). My grandma lives in Texas (I don't) and my mom wanted me to say 'Hi Grandma, merry Christmas!' to the camera. I kept saying 'But she's not here!' And my mom was trying to explain that she would send her the tape. I just didn't understand why I should say Hi Grandma to a stupid camera when my grandma was a bazillion miles away. It was really funny, another one of my favorite home videos.

Merry Christmas!!

About 2 yrs. after I lost my folks, I went to a friends for X-mas and gave the mother a king-size blue star quilt my late mother had won one year (only thing that she ever won) and when she unwrapped it and saw what it was she started crying tears of joy because she knew that my mother was proud of the quilt even though we could never use it because all of our beds were full-size.

I have a sour and sweet Christmas story - I was stationed in Europe in the 1980s and couldnt get to come home for Christmas the 1st 2 years. My parents didnt believe I couldnt get off (I didnt have the seniority) and were keyed off at me. When Christmas #3 approached, it looked like I might be able to go, but a higher ranking person decided he changed his mind and wanted to take the last leave to the US available in my company. This time my parents were outraged beyond belief and I was called all sorts of names and the accusations flew - you are ashamed of us (?), you hate us (!), you dont like the new house we bought and wont come see it (they bought the house next door at a bargain and its the same style as the last one), we knew when we "let you" go into the military they would change you into a man (I was over 18 and last I looked, I was still every inch a woman and what did that have to do about not coming home for Christmas?)....and the whining kept coming thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean. Finally I told them I would see them in summer when I had a better chance at getting off like I did last year and again was told it wasnt the same and they hung up before they got to the part about how come cousin Georgie could get leave to come home EVERY Christmas when he was in Germany (because cousin George was a private in the field and not in charge of half a 500-bed hospital...)

Vietnam was a resort compared to pleasing my folks - purple heart notwithstanding.

Well, Christmas eve morning at 7am I was called and told the other officer decided he wasnt going after all because his family was all scattered about the US doing their own thing. I had the leave, the flight was in 4 hours and a jeep was waiting for me. I jumped out of bed and was packed, had my cats at the neighbors with supplies for a week and on my way to the airport within a half hour. When I touched down in NJ, I called and found no one at home at my parents and school was not out yet for my brother. I called my best friend at work and she took off and with her father came and got me. We had a late lunch together and dropped her dad off, said hello to her mom, and my friend drove me to my parents with her camera ready for the surprise. Well! My parents had just returned from food shopping and finished emptying the car when we drove up. They welcomed her warmly and were cool to me. We came inside and there was my sister home from out of state college with her new boyfriend. They were home but were too preoccupied to answer the phone when I had called it seemed. Dad then gave my friend and I a soda and asked me where I was planning to stay? My sister jumped in that her friend had already moved into my room. Before I gave a rude reply, my friend said I was staying with her parents and my dad kissed me on the cheek and said" See you tomorrow - dinner is at 2 as usual.". I was dismissed from my family on Christmas eve! No tree decorating, no present opening at midnight, just - see ya'll!

Out in my friend's car I was in such deep shock I barely knew she drove 4 blocks to my brother's house - now there was a welcome! His kids ran down the steps to the car with him after them, I barely knew where I was. He looked at me and my friend took him aside as I grabbed the kids and kissed them. Then I heard him growl - WHAT?! Oh, no,no,no! He started back into the house and I grabbed him and said - no, dont go and start something in front of the kids. I'm going home with her and be back tomorrow. He said you should be with famiy and I know hers are practically, but we have no space- darn it. I kissed him and told the kids I be back tomorrow with gifts at Grandmas. They waved and we left. She had gone into the house and phoned her parents and explained. Of course I was welcomed and they made my holiday. I always loved them growing up and they were my second family. I did go back to mine later the next day and obviously my brother made a huge fuss because boyfriend and sister were very respectful and father and mother were soooo nice to me.

But thats long gone and the last time I went back to that house before they died several years later. Now brother's kids are grown and I had Thanksgiving aTHIS year at my niece's home for the first time. I juggled her new baby son and 3 yr daughter on my lap as she baked and we exchanged stories. Pop-Pop, my brother, looked on proudly, it was the first time since I retired from the miltary that I've been "home". Lovely feeling having a family and all that!
