My family has a "White Elephant Chinese Gift Exchange!" Well, that's what we call it anyway!
We take an item from our house, sometimes we put together a little care package like old movies we don't watch anymore with a bag of microwave popcorn and an old blanket that we don't use anymore, of something that we received from someone else that we just don't want, etc...
Everyone draws a number. (If 15 people play, use numbers 1-15.) Whoever has number 1 goes first. Pick a present and unwrap it. #2 takes his turn, but if he wants what #1 unwrapped, he takes that instead of unwrapping another gift. Then #1 goes again. And so on..... At my house, we put a limit on "THEFT!" If a gift had been stolen for a third time, that person gets to keep it safe with them.
this really gets to be hilarious! It brings everyone together too!
I haven't gotten my "White elephants" together yet this year! I had better get with it! At least I won't have to spend anymore money!
Merry Christmas!

One of my best christmas memories with my family was getting a christmas tree. My dad was a student and my mom was a house wife at the time so we could only afford to buy a miniature tree that we kept on a table. But I remember being so excited to decorate it and they let me pick the spots to put the "special" ornaments. It felt special because we all did it together without the noise of a tv or the outside world. Even now, tree decorating is my favorite part. Also, just getting together on Christmas eve with my extended family was exciting. My grandma would make my favorite dish, which was lasagna, which doesn't scream Christmas, but felt special because it's what I wanted. The gifts I got were modest. Mostly things I needed like clothes or shoes. But I remember one year I really wanted a Barbie, so my dad gave me a piggy bank instead and I saved all year until I could buy the doll for the next Christmas. Maybe it seems silly, but I didn't feel cheated. Cos I felt like I earned it.

I have of tradition of boxing people up and giving them as presents to other poor countries. Yes, many old politicians bring grand ol' laughter to those 3rd world places. Next Christmas, I think I will box up Al Gore and send him to King Jong IL. I bet Kimbo would chuckle in delight as Al Gore tried to take flight!

My favorite tradition was getting up really early the day after Thanksgiving and going shopping for the early bird specials.

Christmas Eve candlelight service. It brings all of the families together once a year to remember the one who gave his life for ours and the miracle of his birth.
