They are not supposed to know all the answers. They are required to be able to communicate the material to the students. They have to be able to digest what they read and express the intent of the authors in a way that will teach you how to think.

The teacher edition doesn't just have the answers in it. It's also got lesson plan ideas, questions to ask students in discussions, and other information they need to know in order to prepare and give a really killer lesson.

With that said, sometimes it's not about memorizing answers. Sometimes it's about knowing where to find answers (or how to solve them yourself). I'm not going to try to add 4 digit numbers together in my head while we go over math when I've got the answers right there. I KNOW how to solve the problem, but for time's sake, I'm going to just look at the book.

Speaking as a college professor, I can say that it's not that we cannot solve the problems ourselves, but it's because it makes things easier for us.

Many teacher editions not only have answers, but also provide us with hints as to how to present that material, things to mention, or examples to which we should refer.

And FYI, I've found some of the solutions in our textbooks over the years have been wrong or have left steps out. But it definitely provides us with some guidance and helps us prepare for new classes or new book editions.

I agree with Peter O.

aAnother reason is because there can be some "ify" answers. And when a teachers job depends on those kids giving the one correct answer on the TAKS, you want to make sure that everything is clear, for you and the students.

Because there's a student in the back chewing gum, another student needs to be caught up because they were absent all week, another won't be quiet, another doesn't understand what's going, and the rest of the students don't want to wait for the teacher to figure out the answer.

I wish that I were perfect and didn't need any help. But that doesn't happen. When we grade homework, all that I do is grade the answers, not how to get them. So it is more easier for me to use the answers in the book. But when we take a test, then I will work all the problems and use a rubric to grade the test on how well they apply their knowledge and not just look at the answer.

the sign of a truly smart person is not to know the answer but to know where to find the answer...it is the process not the item!
teachers consulting books is just a model for students to develop the habit of finding answers in different resources...the use of resources is an important skill

It's so funny to read the excuses. In the homeschooling questions, antagonists are consistently saying that homeschooling parents have to know *everything*.

Maybe next time I'll refer them to this question. Thanks all!

I totally agree though...it does make grading faster to have the answers written down, especially for high grades. But I do laugh that my daughter's first grade math book has the answers in the back.

Teachers arent perfect, they are just there to help the kids with all the backround knowledge they have. Have you ever tried to explain something to someone, but even you forget minor details? Teachers need backup sometimes.

Because they can not teach their personal opinion they have to teach what a board made up of several people in different fields decided on as being proper meaning to the questions.
