I rate an answer because I think it's good. Not like some participants who rate an answer because they like the Asker's Avatar picture.

When I rate an answer, sometimes it's because I agree with the answer , and sometimes it's because they gave the same answer as me, and other times it's because the answer may have made me laugh or I thought it was a very good answer.

To rate an answer I would have to agree with it and also think it to me a good answer and well written. All this poor use of the English language is really terrible. That's why we have check spelling when we type an answer.

My rating methods changes with my mood at the time..I give excellent answers a 10, funny as heck answers a 10, totally different than my opinion a 10 if the point is excellent, agreeable a 10, & if a tie occurs for me the one who answered the earliest or has the lowest points,,everyone can earn a 10 from me at some point..=)

About 50 50. If I don't agree with an answer, but it makes good points without being too one-sided I'll give it a thumbs up.

To me thumbs up = Because the answer actually answer's the question and Or in a full sentence.
To me thumbs down = Is not a complete sentence and people don't know what one or two words means to the question. And they ask a question to the question. Or They do not even answer the question.

It can be either one, or both. Sometimes I agree with it because it's a really good answer.

Definitely both...
I love good answers and will always support them with a thumbs up! Even if I disagree. A good answer shows me you are not here only for the points.
And off course I will thumbs up something I agree with, makes the voice stronger!
