Many of the searchers are volunteers and not taking your .oooooooooo1 cent of federal funds being used, and none, even if they work for Oregon, unless you live there or earn money there.

I agree with your premise, however. People who engage in dangerous sports should have to buy insurance to cover any costs of search and rescue and any uninsured medical costs.

The Republicans are the people who cut taxes in Louisiana and Mississippi and then had their mouths out for federal money after the hurricanes. They are the worst "let somebody else pay my costs" types.

Just think if you're driving down (or up) snowy terrain and you get stuck. Don't you want your tax dollars looking for you also? I'm sure these climbers that are lost/dead's folks are glad that there are people looking for them. Why are you alright that your hard-earned money goes to welfare moms milking the system for all it's worth so that they can get away with not working? These guys who are lost are hard-working citizens that pay that same tax just as you, and it's their tax money, too, that's going to finding them. AND the portion of your tax money that you are paying to help find them is so insignificant that it doesn't even matter.

People look for adventure any way possible. If they want to climb a mountain, so be it. They're paying money, too. Unfortunately, they paid the price as well.

Someone welcomed you to the repbulican party. That's not accurate. You said you don't mind some of your money going for welfare. That means you are not a cold, heartless republican.

I have to agree. I have no problem helping people who have run out of options, but a few rich guys who knowingly chose a dangerous hobby, I say they are on their own.

On the other hand, if I was stuck up there, I would be very happy if people worried about me and came looking for me in a storm.

At the end of the day, you can put your head in the lion's mouth, but don't look for sympathy if the lion eats your head. Those guys knew the risks they were taking, and are dealing with the consequences.

This is different from the family that got lost in the Oregon wilderness by accident. They were just trying to get somewhere normal and took a wrong turn.

Rescues have been performed by the Coast Guard, Park Service and local and civilian agencies for years. The person who said blame the Republican Party is a moron. Rescues transcend every party, every race and ethnicity and every political believe and country border. The US has sent people to rescue persons lost in earthquakes, tsunamis and other natural disasters around the globe. The government has spent millions here on the same (remember Katrina?). If a person is lost, hurt or otherwise incapacitated they deserve the best we can do to find them; it's called compassion. It's the basest human response to another human (and sometimes animal) in trouble. When Flight 800 crashed in the Atlantic and rescue divers risked their lives to recover the remain, was that a waste of time? When the World Trade Center was destroyed by terrorists and police and firemen and civilians risked their lives to rescue and search for the lost was that a waste of time? I hope you never need help because you'll find that after calling for your mother you'll be calling for me.

Vote for the Fair tax and you won't have to see any of it go away.

Until then, the taxes you pay go towards local and federal funds that use the money for a variety of things. I'm not sure they use it very wisely, but you can't pick and choose which public services to pay for and which not to.

You seem upset about spending money on helping lost climbers, but that's part of the public service. If your son or daughter were lost you might like for someone to look for them without charging you to do so.

I find other uses much more wasteful than search parties.

so basically what you're saying is that things like the coast guard/rescue teams/emergency response teams and whatnot are a waste of money..
according to you there is no point in time where someone should be out having fun and run into an accident it was their fault b/c what they were doing was unnecessary. so basically, i get into a car accident on the way to a leisure afternoon and the rescue teams that help put the car fire out, extract me from the car, and investigate the accident is pointless b/c i didn't HAVE to go on my leisure trip..
are you serious?? accidents happen.. and that's why there are teams to respond to them. they weren't doing something stupid or wreckless. i doubt they had any intention of going up there to get lost and stranded and need to call out rescue teams.
you also have to realize that these rescue teams are tiehr part time/volunteer work..or spend a good portion of their time doing other work. it's not like they are paid billions of dollars a year to sit around on their keister until someone needs them for a search/rescue.

I've always been puzzled by the human need to risk lives in rescuing people from their own stupidity, or worse, risking lives in recovering dead bodies.

In so many cases people literally risk lives, sometimes dozens or even hundreds of lives, in order to search for one or two people who have done something idiotic.

And you're right, it costs a fortune in taxpayer money, as well as risked lives, in attempting to save these people.

It seems to be some sort of instinctive need within our species. Where it derives from, I have no idea.

I remember after the Loma Prieta earthquake, all the efforts made to dig through rubble to find victims. A friend of mine was in a building that had been crushed by a brick building next door.

The brick was unstable - yet rescue crews risked their lives digging for her (she was found dead...). I was one of the people who volunteered to dig, and there were a lot of others who volunteered. Why? Haven't a clue, the building could have collapsed at any time...

Of course if you are the unfortunate one, we have to go looking for YOU, since you so obviously think you are the center of the universe. Right? We all do things without thinking, & end up in some kind of trouble. I'm glad there are many more people who would help than make stupid excuses for not doing so. I hope you grow up a little & become one of us.

Talk show hosts this morn were saying that perhaps when someone pulls all of this expense and energy, that they or their familys should be responsible for some repayment of the expenses. They also mentioned that there are gps and beacons that these risk-takers can take with them to help assist in locating them.

Sometimes, people are selfish and they just don't think. I'd be embarrased if I got myself caught up in the tree, and the fireman had to get me out.

Yeah, it is his "right" to climb that mountain, and we have to honor every whim of every person in America, because otherwise we would be violating their "rights".

Want to come to this country illegally, but don't have enough money for health care? We'll pay for it!

Want to kill your unborn child, but don't have the money? We'll pay for it!

Too lazy to get a job? We'll pay the rent!

Already too poor to support your 3 children, but want to have a fourth? We'll pay for it!

Welcome to the world of unnecessary taxes. When we make it the government's duty to support every whim of every person, we also have to pay for it.
