Fisher Price makes a "Laugh & Learn" chair. My son got it from a neighbor for his first birthday and frankly I thought it was not going to be something he played with. On the contrary, he absolutely LOVED it.
Also the Leap Start Learning Table - he got this at 14 months, but I wish I had it at around 9 months.
Both are around $30-$40

I would start buying something a little advanced so the toy will get full use. A couple really good ones are the Fischer Price Bounce and Spin Zebra, Fisher Price Drop and Roar Dinosaur, Fisher Price Learning Home, Fisher Price Amazing Animals Sing & Go Choo-Choo Train. Just to name a few.
You coul always go to Toysrus.com and check out their toy ratings. They have a "Top Sellers" link for each age. I suggest the 12-24 months. :)

Anything that is 6+months you can even get 12 months things. Since it is faily unlikely the baby is going to be playing by itself, books are good. Stacking and building toys. Pull along noise makers. puppets. at 10 months gender toys are not that big of a deal, so giggle dolls and big soft cars/trucks.
Good luck and have fun shopping

I would give anything that has to do with learning. As in books with big fuzzy letters and numbers. The learning of shapes and colors. I guess most books are for learning for that age group, but I think its the best way to go. I have a 10 month old and he is all about books!! Pop ups with shapes and colors, blocks with letters and numbers...things like that would be fun AND educational. It's never too early to introduce babies to letters and numbers. Just don't force it.

Monogramed towel sets are always cute. Or those duckie bathrobes that have a face...
but...clothes are also a good way to go. If you're willing to spend more, maybe a nice blanket from the pottery barn or something.
