That is because of the "repressed" culture that the grown-ups impose on the younger generation. It has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with "lack of passion" or "lack of talent."

The problem is that deep within the Indian conscience, there is the strict, paralyzing, and conservative mindset that refuses to think outside the box.

Parents encourage their sons to be engineers and IT experts while they encourage their daughters to pursue medical ambitions. The only "outlet" the younger generation has is Bollywood movies, cricket, and eating-out. Given this scenario, the younger generation has no other options other than "take the road that is traveled before."

But the GOOD NEWS is that the younger generation IS fighting the tradition and entering fields their parents would not approve.

Take for example India's proudest example today, Narain Karthikeyan. He is India's FIRST Formula One driver. He is a hero in India; though only recognized by F1 fans!

It will be another 20 or so years before India can fully establish itself into other fields of sporting. Only time will tell but the revolution has begun.

You do realise that SA are actually No.1 in Tests and ODI's don't you? They are the only team that can claim to be at the top. However there is certainly a rise of the sides that you have mentioned. Retirement wise IMO Sl are better placed in the near future than India. I wouldn't discount the Aussies to soon either as has been done many times before now, 2005 Ashes was a prime example. Look what happened after that series. The funny thing is though that the same people who will tell you guys like Langer, Hayden, Gilchrist, McGrath, Warne etc weren't really all that great will usually be the first ones to point out that they are no longer in the side.

1. Most of the "Other sports" that you mean, are western culture based and did not find much takers in India historically. Field hockey and Polo, two sports of Indian origin are very popular in India and at some point of time or other India were world beaters in them.
2. Soccer is surely in sorry state as an organised sport in India, like Athletics and Gymnastics, but people are still very passionate about them in certain parts of India.
3. Indians do focus more on education and academics and less on physical activities, especially sports - which is considered to be a waste of creative / useful time. Different folks, different strokes - you know. That's why there are more Techies and Doctors from India and less sportsters ...
4. Indians are pasionate about a lot of things - including some sports that you may not have heard about ....

They have many sports in India, including football. They are masters at Polo, and they have their own versions of Bat and Ball games. There is no lack of talent and they are very passionate about their sports. Just because you are sheltered and do not know about these things doesn't mean they don't exist. Research your question in the future. You will get a better response I am sure.

Lack of passion, talent and organisation. How can a country like Australia, for instance, with a much smaller population base produce a vastly better cricket team? Even with so much support for one sport the Indians still can't get it right.

They would be recognized if they had time from thier Pujas and Phaats that they do in the temples all year long, and ofcourse the bollywood Movies, i mean tendulkar thinks about movies when he's playing cricket!.. its brain washing... india can't play other sports other than cricket is because they're skini and they dont eat meat at all... how do you expect an athelet to work with only eating Vegetables... they lack physical strenght and they are afraid of bats in the caves... lmao lol thats why they cant play any other sport because they just cant execute the engergy needed for other sports! cricket is only slow game that there is in which they can just slowly hit and score!

India is NOT a sub-continent, it is just a country like any other country. The name of the sub-continent is SOUTH ASIA.

The answer to your query is that in most of the third world countries the elite generally select third rate teams and individuals on the basis of nepotism, corruption, lack of expertise in the area under control, egos of the big names of the sports both within the teams and without etc. The list can go on and on....

Facilities and infrastructure for developing other sports are very much lacking due ton paucity of funds as compared to cricket.
Since cricketers are getting lot of money as compared to other sports, children are more passionate to become a cricketer as compared to other sports.
