I was wondering why sugars had to be used in DNA instead of other structures. Could other substitutes be used instead that would accomplish the same results (structure, hydrogen bonding, etc.)?

There's probably some viable substitute, but you have to take into account the feasibility of making these. In concept, it makes sense that there could be silicon based life since it's in the same group as carbon, but long hydrosilicon chains are unstable.
