Solomon is the Wisest man that lived. So, the first answer does point that there are more than three wise men. They brought what looks like useless gifts for Jesus. True, a baby cannot use them, so useless. But, the gifts are symbolic of the kingship of Jesus, the King above all kings on Earth, with Gold. Frankincense for the pure and affectionate life he gave us, especially in the last three years, where he preached the Word of God. And it was not just the wise men, but it was Mary who poured costly perfume on the feet of Jesus, and wiped it with her hair. She, like the wise men, did do it in honour of His death on the cross, as a memorial. You should become wise too, now that the symbols have been explained. Solomon was known for his wisdom in asking to cut a baby into half and give him to the two mothers who claimed him. Read the Bible to find out about Solomon's Wisdom. Look at the Nature around you and see its beauty. This is all God's Wisdom.

(someone already said this but..)
The wise men did come later on in Jesus' life but they believed Jesus to be the king of the jews. THe Wise men were also known as magi or sometimes kiings... they were the kings (if all else) foretellers, ther ones the kings went to first. THese wise men saw not a star, but what seemed to be saturn and jupiter aline in pisces. Pisces is the sign of jerusalem, saturn resembles new, and jupiter resembles king. So the Men thought there to be a new king of jerusalem.
The men journied to jerusalem to tell king herod. King herod, who was greedy, kept his thrown under any circumstances, and killed anyone he thought was going to take his thrown, then sent out the men to look for that baby.
So, the men brought Jesus presents. The reasons there are 3 men described in many stories was because of the 3 gifts presentd to Jesus. (sometimes theres 2 or 4)
They brought gold, frackensense, and mehr.
Gold is of the earth which resembled an earthly king.
Frankencense comes from the sap of a rare tree, and smelled sweetly as an inscence which resembled God... (i think)
Mehr also came from some rare plant and was used in embalming the dead. This is also used medicinally and is being used in the search for a cure for cancer.
When these three presents were given to Jesus, It resembled some sort of test... If he picked the GOld, he was an earthly king, if he used frankencense, then he would be an eternal king (or something) if he picked mehr,,, well i dunnno...Jesus picked all three so he was messiah. Duh.
Yea then herod got scared and sent off to kill every baby boy under the age of 2 (or at)... before this God sent the magi a dream to go home and not tell herod their findings... God also sent Joseph a dream to flee bethlemhem and go to egypt... Luckily for them, the presents given to jesus would pay for their expences in their value.. .... meant to be i gues..

The wise men did not bring gifts to Jesus until years later. This is a huge misconception. Shepherds came to Jesus not the "three" wise men.
When the wise men came to Jesus with their gifts (the number of wise men are not specified in the bible, it just states the wise men brought three gifts) each gift was a symbol.
Read the bible for further details. . . . .
