I'm not politician, but repairing any governmental system would be like trying to convince the entire world in practicing only one religion...it can't be done. So if you were in office and found that you couldn't fix what was broken, then oh well, you might as well make a few bucks and enjoy the "power" while you have it. EVERYONE is greedy, even you at some level.

The old adage, "Give an Inch, Take a Mile" might do well to answer your question. It's not that easy though. I think that everyone has their own ideas and everyone thinks they are right. It is very complex. Reminds me of a song from the early 90's from the band Love and Rockets, "No New Tale To Tell". In the beginning he sings, "Our little life's get complicated. It's a simple thing. Simple as a flower, and that's a complicated thing!"

Your example illustrates the limitations of a government controlled economy. In a free market you can't get what you want without providing what someone else wants first. You can only get paid for serving your fellow man.

In a government controlled economy you can get paid for serving the bureaucrats that run the government. It is a system that creates a culture of corruption.

They are human. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Humans have the capability to be vastly more evil than anyone before them. They also can be vastly more compassionate. They don't have to be either one. They choose how they behave.
