....The proper way: is to get your cordless and "drill" out the plate on exterior side of lock where the bolts are screwed in from the inside. The lock will fall right out of the door. This shows your finess as a maintenance type of person without appearing criminal. I have been in apartment management for 7 years. That is how I direct my maintenance personnel to handle the situation. You must have a new deadbolt to install. (Free is management or the weather ruined the lock, $ 25.00 if the tenant ruined the lock or lost the key., or if apartment cannot be secured) You know if some guest stole their key. Only locksmiths can pick locks.

knob locks are a piece of cake because they twist easily. You need something that won't break off in the keyhole for a deadbolt. If you can, find a key of the same brand as the lock and find the lowest point of the grooves. File the rest of the key to that point and it should work. I'd do it a piece at a time and try after each spot you file down. Start closest to where you hold and work forwards. It's the high points of the key that prevent any key working with any lock.

if you know what a lock pic looks like, make one or look arounf your garage and you propably have an old metal saw blade (hack) and cut it up accordingly.
