It was a hand painted porcelin music box. My son loves it and wants it played when I lay him down for a nap and at night. Hopefully he can pass it on to his kids. Also, the same person gave me a large wooden memory box which I thought was so lovely. I used the diapers, baby tub. clothes etc that I got from the baby shower but now that me son is 19mo the only thing I still use is the memory box and music box.

it isn't a glamourous gift, but it is a much appriciated gift. A medicine and nail clipper set ( includes nasal syringe, medicine droppers, finger nail clippers, and sometimes more). Infant tylenol, mylecon drops ( gas drops ), diapers and wipes are always a plus. I really liked getting people the bears that play a heart beat in the crib. Clothes are great, but get older sized clothes, like 6+ months. Everyone wants to getteh cutes infant outfit, then forget the baby grows. And one thing that I absolutley loved was if you live close,a certificate for free babysitting when ever so mom can get out when she would like a pampering. or even a gift card to a nice restrant.
Good luck and have fun shopping

I LOVED the huge box of baby diapers, baby wipes and a wipe warmer container. They all came in a cute wicker baby basket that my friend had put together.
I'm a single mom and a first time mom. I heard that you go through diapers really quickly. Wow! They were right! It's the best gift that a mom can really use! Plus, the wipe warmer is so great so my little one didn't have a cold babywipe on his butt. I am sure that would not have felt too comforting.
Anyway, good luck. Hope that helped!

Besides the obvious necessities, someone gave me a little kit that included nail clippers a syringe, thermometer, etc. I use it all the time and carry it with me everywhere. Other ideas (from gifts I received and use/used that were not on my registry) are :
-infant bathing suit
-organic baby shampoo, bath wash and lotion
-books
-clothing bigger than 9 months
-bibs with a snap not velcro-my daughter was able to pull the velcro bib right off
-infant tylenol, infant qtips, comb and brush set
-bath toys
I could go on and on but these were invaluable to me. I'm a first time Mom and these gifts were given by seasoned parents. If nothing is appealing I also received a few gift cards to get things I needed like diapers and wipes.

Our friends and my wife's mother planned our shower, and they had an absolutely brilliant idea: everyone who came to the shower purchased their favorite children's book. We ended up with a library of little golden books plus some of the newer ones (i.e. Dumb Bunnies). The guests also signed the inside of the book with a message, instead of buying cards to go along with the presents.
Books are fairly inexpensive, but if you think about it, many children remember their favorite children's book but not the clothes they wore as a baby, right? These books were easily the highlight of the shower. People were more excited about the books (not on the registry, therefore a genuine surprise) than the 'usual' presents.
Hope this helps!

I got nearly everything I registered for at my baby shower (not including furniture), but the thing that was really neat is this sweet little baby bonnet that's made to be worn at a baptism (or christening), and then (if the baby is a girl - which mine is), you save the bonnet and when she gets married, you take two of the bonnet stitches out and it turns into a little white hankerchief for her to use as the "something old" in her wedding ("something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue"). If the baby's a boy you can give it to his fiancee to use at his wedding for "something borrowed." It's really a wonderful gift idea, and I never would've thought of that without receiving the bonnet as a gift.

the thing that actually helps me the most is my nursing pillow, but there are so many things a new mom can use like: diapers, wipes, wipe warmer, powder, soap, clothes, blankets, hooded bath towles, wash clothes, bottles, bouncy seat, socks, children's clothes hangers, diaper pale, bath tub, thermometer, safty items, diaper bag, head support, gas drops, baby tylenol, dreft, laundry stain remover, the list goes on forever. If mom is breastfeeding try: nursing pads, milk storage bags, nursing pillow. Hope this helps.

At my bathe, the single which had the most laughs replaced into passing out a cheap paper plate to all the travelers, have them carry the plate on correct of their head, and provides you them 30 seconds to entice somewhat one. The mom-to-be possibilities her well known for the winner (I confirmed anybody the funniest ones). My suggestion is to not have too many - they could get extremely previous rapidly. As for presents, we gave out some present playing cards, and little ornamental candle holders with candles, and so on.

A first tooth brush, as many give clothes and nappies and toiletries, but the first toothbrush, now!!! It is kept till the first teeth appear and is the longest lasting gift plus it saves mom the money to buy the first one anyway!!!

My cousin purchased one of those 3 dollar wicker "moses style" baskets from Walmart and filled it with baby items. The most useful items I received were cloth diapers/burp clothes, Infant Tylenol and medicine kit, baby ear swabs (did you know they make special q-tips for babies?!) baby lotion (johnson and johnson. My little one wound up being allergic to the lavender scented ones), DIAPERS AND WIPES and receiving blankets. All of those items were things I needed in abundance and I still use the little wicker basket to hold her dirty laundry in. Perfect!
