It's pretty easy actually...

The first thing you want to do is the easiest. Protecting yourself while making online purchases. Choose one Visa credit card that you will use for ALL of your online purchases. Go to the link below and register that Visa Card. Make sure that you only shop at online stores that are Verified by Visa and that the web pages are secured. They will start with https://

Problem #1 solved.

Now for the biggest part. Sign up for credit monitoring. You can also add in another level of security by not allowing creditors to grant you automatic credit. You have to write to the major credit bureaus for this and it has to be re-newed periodically.

Get a paper shredder. Keep utility bills and statements from revolving credit and installment accounts for the past 6 months only. Shred everything else and keep up to date on this. Personally I scan all that stuff into .tif documents and shred everything. I'm 38 and have never needed a 5 year old utility bill for cable in a city that I don't live in anymore, don't you will either. A lot of people pack-rat this kind of stuff and then one day they through out years of statements in the trash because either they don't have a shredder or it would take to long to shred everything. Obviously a very bad idea for many reason. Don't pack-rat statements.

Don't fill out applications for instant credit in paper at departments stores etc. The odds are a 100x greater that a store clerk will steal personal information vs someone hacking into the banks database. If you want credit for that store, go to the website. The 10% instant savings isn't worth the security risk (if you have good credit)

Don't keep your social security card in your purse or wallet.

Don't leave receipts from bank tellers, purchases, etc. in your car.

And DON'T valet your car with your house cars attached to you car keys. Your vehicle registration is in the car, a crooked employee could call his homies, come get your house key and have your house cleaned out while you sit eating diner.

Not being a victim of this crime takes effort. Don't be who fall victim to identity theft because the vast majority of them did nothing to prevent it from happening.

1. Keep different passwords for different accounts/websites/etc
2. Always have a firewall installed and turned on on your computer
3. Always keep antivirus installed on your computer
3.5 Always keep anti-spyware solutions installed on your computer
4. NEVER log into secure sites such as banks and the like on Internet Cafe Computers, too often have I seen keyloggers used and details are taken just like that.
5. Use discression when using online websites. Ensure that you never click links to sites like banks etc that you might recieve in an email, always type the address into your browser yourself.
6. Use discression when browsing the net. If it looks too good to be true then it probably is, if it looks dodgey, then it probably is too.

That is just about all that I can think of at the moment.

Beware of giving your credit card number to websites that just need it to "activate" something. Also, purchasing something online too. Some of it is safe, but beware of those small companies and such. Alos, when your eating at a restaurant and they give you a receipt, if the whole credit card number is on there, watch it and make sure no one steals it. Beleive me, it's happened. Other than that, guard your credit card/purse/other cards/social security/ everything very carefully.

Use a good firewall like Zone Alarm.
Buy items with your credit cards only from well
knowed site like Ebay, Amazon etc..who have
a great reputation.

Don't do your online banking at work as network administrators
can monitor your typing etc..

Don't enroll to credit cards that you don't know.

And don't answer to email scam.
